Lost your Motivation? You can still rekindle your Excitement in Life

Do you remember how many times you’ve started a project with a surge of excitement, only to see it fade after a few days? This high-low transition in a person’s enthusiasm sometimes leads to depression, and causes most people to give up quickly.

Why do people lose motivation in the first place?

If you want to get your motivation back, you have to understand how your emotions work. The typical pattern of the human psyche is filled with peaks and valleys, high points and low points. When you write a resolution or tackle a new project, you’re filled with so much optimism about the benefits and rewards you will get. While this surge of motivation is a good thing because it gets you going, it’s only temporary. In most cases, it will wear off as soon as you realize the loopholes in your grand scheme.

Regain your motivation in 3 easy steps

  1. Use the 15 minute rule to control your motivation swings. People’s moods often sap their motivation. How many times do you remember saying “I’m not in the mood” or “I really don’t feel like doing it”? If you succumb to your mood swings, you’ll hardly accomplish anything. To fight this feeling, practice the 15-minute rule.  So if you need to do something, but you don’t feel up to the task, you should try doing it anyway for at least 15 minutes. In most cases, 15 minutes of doing your task will give you enough momentum and motivation to keep going. If it doesn’t work, try step 2.

  1. Re-examine your strategies and sources of motivation. Now that you’re not as motivated, and the 15 minute rule isn’t enough to keep you going again, it’s time for you to re-evaluate your plans. When you started your project, there’s a big chance that you were “blinded” by the sheer possibilities of your idea that you didn’t see the pitfalls of your plan, or maybe you set your expectations too high. Instead of giving up completely, you should find solutions to the difficulties you experienced and set better, more realistic expectations. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around. Figure out another way to get pass it.

  1. Don’t stop now. Follow one success with another success. A lot of people often become complacent after they get a short taste of victory; they take a break, relax or reward themselves. Yes there’s nothing wrong with this, however, doing this will “stop you in your tracks” instead of helping you “keep the ball rolling”. Succeeding in a particular task will give you a fresh surge of motivation and energy to keep going, so you should take advantage of this by taking another step. Keep going, you can always reward yourself later. The longer you keep going, the bigger the reward you will reap.

Losing and regaining your motivation is part of the normal cycle of life. Everyone experiences this at some point. You should recongise that this is normal, and use this turning point to understand your emotions and make it work for you. Follow these 3 steps whenever you find yourself stuck or feeling down.

What’s Your Money Story?

Posted by Tim Kincaid

Money is a powerful concept. Just think of all the ways in which most of us give our attention to money – how we earn it, manage it, account for it, save it, spend it, worry about it, and even give it away. Not surprisingly, many of us have unquestioned limiting beliefs about money. We may even hold judgments about the relationships others have with their money – rich or poor, lavish spenders, or overly frugal.

In The Energy of Money, author Dr. Maria Nemeth challenges readers to create a personal “money autobiography” by writing a description of our lifelong experience of money, from earliest memories to now. She suggests that what we observed and learned about money from our earliest memories informs our money beliefs as adults. What a sobering exercise! My money autobiography showed me how my own Money Story – my current beliefs about money – was very much shaped by my parents’ beliefs about money.

My folks were members of “The Greatest Generation.” They were kids during the depths of the Great Depression and were young adults during WWII. (Keywords: Lack, Scarcity, Limitation, Rationing, Distrust, Secrecy, Hardship, Doing-without.) Understandably, they saw the world as generally an unfriendly place; money was hard to come by and to be protected at all costs. For them, the glass often looked half full. I acknowledge that I didn’t experience the hugely challenging times they endured growing up. Different life experience means different worldview, so I see and experience the world differently – as a generally friendly place of abundance that is full of choices and opportunities. For me, the glass is more than half full. (Keywords: Abundance, Generous Universe, Win-Win, Flow, Creativity, Generative)

I felt uncomfortable, even a little disloyal, in questioning differences in our belief systems. Working with my own Coach, I concluded that embracing my own true personal beliefs is not disrespectful of elders nor does it invalidate their experiences. Rather, this simply means making a personal choice to mindfully notice the beliefs I hold, discern if they are true for me now, and then change them by creating a more personally authentic Money Story of my own. Nobody gets to be wrong!

Coaching is a great way to explore unquestioned limiting beliefs. Not surprisingly, money is a common focus of calls with my coaching clients. I invite them to examine their own Money Story – its origins, benefits and limitations. Often they decide a substantial re-write of their own Money Story is in order to craft a more modern, accurate and congruent set of personal beliefs around money.

It’s not easy to uproot lifelong beliefs. Friends and family members may not feel comfortable or supportive of such changes at first, or ever. But I suggest that there are few things that are more satisfying than feeling more authentic, aware, and aligned with one’s own values and beliefs. So, what’s your Money Story?

10 questions to help create YOUR new Money Story:

  1. What was the financial circumstance of your childhood?
  2. What messages about money can you recall when you were young?
  3. In what ways do you think your current financial situation relates to that of your family of origin?
  4. What is one assumption or belief about money that no longer serves you well?
  5. What might be a desired outcome of embracing a new personal Money Story?
  6. By changing your Money Story, what are you saying “yes” to?
  7. By changing your Money Story, what are you saying “no” to?
  8. If you want to ask for some help, who would be supportive and non-judgmental as you explore?
  9. When will you begin?
  10. How will you know your new money story is accurate and truly your own?

What would your life look like if you truly loved yourself as a gay man?

How much more powerful would you be if you fully honored yourself for the unique contributions you make to the world?

When was the last time you practiced self-love?

Join a community of gay men as we explore these questions together in my workshop, Radical Self-Love.  It runs at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 6:30 -- 8:30 p.m. in New York City.

Self-Love: The Foundation of All Success

What would happen if every gay man on the planet took five minutes of every day to consciously focus on loving himself?

What if every gay man consciously, habitually expressed his appreciation and love for his fellow gay men?

How could we change the world?

As I have begun creating a workshop on this topic, I have been exploring these ideas.  And what I am finding is that simple acts of self-love and love toward others, repeated habitually, can yield powerful results.

Because when you truly love yourself, you can accomplish anything.

What Can You Do Tomorrow to Live a Happier Life?

Happiness isn’t achieved by having a perfect life. It is achieved when people choose to overlook the imperfections of their life and make the best of what was given to them.

The subject of happiness has been reviewed by many scientists, philosophers, authors and researchers. Regardless of the enormous amount of information about happiness, many people still find it difficult to be happy. For that reason, I believe many people will still benefit from this post. I do hope these tips bring you more happiness in the future.

So, I present you the “3 Things You can Do Tomorrow to Live a Happier Life”

ONE Change the way you view things around you. Your happiness doesn’t solely depend on what’s happening around you, it actually depends on how you interpret what’s happening in your life. If you get upset with small setbacks or discouraged with unfortunate events, you should practice looking at the positive effects of everything that happens to you. Here’s the good news: you can improve your optimism and appreciation skills through simple self development techniques. Instead of thinking about the negative effects each situation brings you, try to see things from another angle. Setbacks are not failures, they’re just temporary roadblocks. And if you learn to see the beauty and benefit of each setback, you’ll be able to enjoy your journey in life better.

TWO Deal with uncomfortable situations IMMEDIATELY. Nothing good will come out of running away from awkward situations or problems. Yes you may experience temporary relief if you don’t deal with them immediately but those feelings will cling to you and make you feel uneasy and stressed. The best way to deal with situations like this is to just breathe deeply, assess the situation, talk to the concerned people and move on. Clients who practice this self development tip feel lighter at the end of their day, and it makes them happy knowing that they didn’t leave any pending issues unresolved.

THREE Plan happiness activities for tomorrow. Instead of bombarding your daily schedule with errands and other work duties, I suggest you also insert happy activities in your daily schedule. These activities don’t have to take long, make some of them are just 5 minutes long. Sometimes just thinking about happy activities is enough a person feel happy.

Here are few examples:

Instead of working on a report for 3 straight hours, insert a 10 minute break to browse the internet for funny websites or interesting reads. Better yet, get up and grab a cup of coffee or a small snack that will boost your energy.

Reward yourself after a stressful day by going to a massage or ordering your favorite takeout and watching a home movie with your friends.

Go on a mini vacation! Take a road trip to the country side to enjoy the scenic views or head to the beach with your family. Aside from relaxing, this will also give you time to bond with your wife and kids.

If you practice these 3 self development tips today, I’m sure that you’ll feel lighter and happier the next day. And these tips will not only make you happy, it will also make other people around you happy. Real happiness is contagious and these tips can certainly help you share the happiness around. It may even make people like you more!

      Know Bottom...Know Top!

      Posted by Rick Clemons

      in Uncategorized

Let’s get real. Without the bottom there’s no top. And the converse is also true...without a top there’s no bottom. The two dualities play an evocative game of “what if’s” in our lives that sometimes we forget to appreciate. For instance...

Without mountaintops there’s be nothing but flatness to look at!

Here’s the point, so many times I hear clients say, “I feel like I have hit rock bottom.” Without being an insensitive horses butt I respond, “Congrats! Now let’s figure out what your new top looks like!”

The bottom line is this (no pun intended). If you never experience the bottom you can never appreciate the top. So little effort is put into appreciating the big win, the accomplishment, the “look what I did.” Even Emmy, Grammy, Oscar trophies eventually end up on a shelf somewhere. But boy do we ever spend a lot of time playing in the underbelly of being at the bottom of the heap.

How about changing that dynamic? Stepping away from mediocrity and saying, “Thank God I had that experience so that now I can truly appreciate...”

Do you have a bottomed out story that’s dragging you down? Something that simply seems there is no top to? Think again. Or better yet, act as if the bottom were the top and see how your perspective might change.
